Anthony Toner is a singer-songwriter from Northern Ireland. His music is described in terms of American roots influences, but his work is associated with Belfast and wider Irish songwriting traditions.

Recording career

His first album, Eventually, is released in 2002 and receives steady radio play and critical attention. It is produced by Clive Culbertson, a former bassist with Van Morrison, and features a set of well-crafted songs and strong performances.

He later releases A Sky for Every Day, also produced by Clive Culbertson. That album includes the song Sailortown, a radio hit that deals with the changing character of one of Belfast’s oldest and best-known neighbourhoods. In the week of its release, the album is named album of the week by BBC Radio Ulster.

Songwriting

Toner’s writing is noted for its narrative focus and for songs built around places and everyday life. Sailortown is one example of this, linking a personal song to the history and identity of Belfast.

Current work

He is working on a collection of new songs under the title The Duke of Oklahoma and Other Stories.
