Anthony Hamilton is a US R&B and soul singer and producer from Charlotte, in the United States. He is identified with contemporary R&B, hip hop, neo soul, R&B and soul, and he is associated with The Soultronics. He releases music on My Music Box, LLC.

Early life and career beginnings

Hamilton is born in 1971 in Charlotte, North Carolina, and he begins singing in his church choir at the age of 10. In 1993 he leaves Charlotte for New York City, where he signs with Andre Harrell’s Uptown Records. While at Uptown, he records XTC, which does not receive radio play.

Breakthrough and solo work

He reaches a wider audience with the chorus on Nappy Roots’ Po' Folks, which earns a Grammy nomination for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration in 2003. His second album, Comin' from Where I'm From, is released in 2003 and becomes the recording that raises his profile. The album includes the singles “Comin' from Where I'm From,” “Charlene” and “I’m a Mess.”

He also appears on Jadakiss’ “Why” and Tupac’s “Thugz Mansion,” and earlier makes a guest appearance on Busta Rhymes’ album When Disaster Strikes, singing the hook on “Things We Be Doin' For Money.”

Compilations, later releases and collaborations

Soulife is released by Rhino Records in 2005 and collects songs recorded during the early part of his career. That same year, Ain't Nobody Worryin is issued by SoSoDef/Zomba Label Group. In 2007, the compilation Southern Comfort is released, featuring songs written and recorded during a similar period. The Point of it all follows in 2008.

Hamilton also appears on Buddy Guy’s 2005 album Bring Em In, contributing vocals to Guy’s version of Bob Dylan’s “Lay Lady Lay.” The album also includes guest appearances by John Mayer and Carlos Santana.

Awards and other appearances

At the BET Awards in 2006, Hamilton wins the BETJ “Cool Like That” Award. He also receives a Grammy in 2009 for a tribute performance to Al Green. In 2007 he performs two tracks on the soundtrack to American Gangster and appears in a scene in the film.
