Another Green World

Another Green World is a UK chillout and ambient group from the United Kingdom, centred on Dan Carpenter and Paul Chousmer. The act records and performs a blend of electronica, woodwind, percussion and keyboards, with a sound associated with synthpop, ambient, dream pop, psychedelic and chillwave influences.

Formation and style

The group first performs together in 1984 with an extended four-hour improvisation in the Chislehurst Caves, at a psychedelic event organised by Christian Paris of the London underground club Alice in Wonderland. From the start, the project develops around atmospheric, festival-friendly soundscapes. Its music draws on sources such as Erik Satie, Holger Czukay, the Klezmer tradition and Lee “Scratch” Perry, alongside wider influences from 1980s new wave, synthpop and shoegaze.

The group’s recordings are described through warm, tape-saturated production, with playful guitars, drum machines, synthesizers and distant, soft vocals. Paul Chousmer contributes ethereal keyboards, while Dan “Spannerman” Carpenter brings saxophone and other wind-led textures.

Members

Paul Chousmer and Dan Carpenter are the core members. Chousmer works with keyboards, bass clarinet, bells and electronica, and is also associated with the name Zuvuya. Carpenter, also known as Dan “Spannerman” Carpenter, plays saxophone and has worked under the Spannerman name as well.

Live work and festival appearances

Another Green World becomes a regular fixture on the festival circuit, appearing at events including Club Dog, Whirl-Y-Gig, Megadog, The Big Chill, Return To The Source, WOMAD, Phoenix, Guildford, early Glastonbury festivals, Solfest and Faery Fest. The group also plays free festivals and benefit gigs, and performs live parachute sets at Whirl-Y-Gig. It tours with Circus Archaos and The Thunderdogs across Europe and Scandinavia in 1991 and 1992.

Recordings and collaborations

The group contributes to a range of compilation albums in the UK and the USA, including releases connected with Planet Dog, Return To The Source and Whirl-Y-Gig. In 1996, it joins Magick Eye Records and releases the CD Invisible Landscape.

Chousmer’s wider work includes managing and playing keyboards with Webcore, helping to facilitate releases through Jungle Records, recording and touring with Fields of the Nephilim between 1989 and 1991, producing Nitzer Ebb’s first recording, appearing regularly on Astralasia recordings and performances, founding Zuvuya, recording a BBC Radio 1 Peel session in 1994, producing Terence McKenna’s Dream Matrix Telemetry, collaborating with Jake Stephenson of Optic Eye, featuring on Judy Dyble’s Spindle and The Whorl, and touring with Ozric Tentacles in Europe in 2006. He works from Somerset, where he develops new ambient and cinematic material.

Carpenter appears with Jamiroquai, tours in Australia with his own performance band Spannerman, and runs the jazz-punk big band Spanner Jazz Punks. He also works with projects including Ring of Roses and Earth Nicht.
