Anish Kumar is a British DJ and producer from Washington in Sunderland, and is based in Cambridge. His music combines house, breakbeats and hip-hop, with a sound described through references to Daft Punk-style house, anthemic breakbeats and moody hip-hop. He is an electronic artist.

Career

Kumar begins to attract wider attention through a series of releases and DJ appearances that draw support from BBC Radio 1 and other dance-music tastemakers. A self-released track in early 2021 receives “Hottest Record in the World” support from Annie Mac without the help of a promo team. He also plays a set at London’s Earth for the South Asian-focused festival Dialled In, and appears at BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend.

Releases and collaborations

In 2021, Kumar releases “Blackpool Boulevard” on Ninja Tune’s Technicolor imprint as a collaboration with Barry Can’t Swim. The track becomes a notable underground hit, receives specialist radio support from Pete Tong, who names it an “Essential New Tune”, and Danny Howard, who presents it as a “Hottest Record in the World”. It later reaches BBC Radio 1’s playlist.

Reception

Kumar’s live performances and releases earn strong radio backing and attention across dance music circles. He is also booked for Four Tet’s curated All-Dayer at London’s Finsbury Park.
