Andy Sheppard is a British jazz saxophonist and composer from Wiltshire, England, born in 1957. He emerges on the British jazz scene in the late 1970s after joining the hard bebop band Sphere at the age of 19, and he develops his early reputation in the wine bars and jazz clubs of Bristol, where a young jazz scene is active into the early 1980s.
He works beyond the more traditional settings of jazz, performing in nightclub contexts with world music groups as well as with established improvisers such as Keith Tippett. His work places him in contemporary jazz and post-bop settings, and he appears with the Andy Sheppard Quartet and the Carla Bley Big Band.
Sheppard receives several prizes at the British Jazz Awards. He also collaborates with a number of major figures in contemporary jazz, including Gil Evans, Carla Bley, George Russell and Steve Swallow.
