Andy Compton is a UK house and deep house producer, musician and DJ whose work sits in house and soul. He becomes a full-time musician at the age of 16, playing guitar in several bands before focusing on the deeper side of house music, drawing on jazz and soul as part of that sound.
Early work and the Rurals
In 1993 he begins running underground countryside barn raves under the name Rural Promotions, which later becomes the name of his first record label. He forms The Rurals in 1994 and soon works with vocalist Marie Tweek, helping shape the group’s soulful style.
The Rurals spend the next fifteen years developing a live sound that combines live elements with electronic production. The group becomes widely known in deep house, with more than 70 singles, 12 LPs and tracks appearing on more than 200 compilations.
Notable releases and recognition
One of the group’s key releases is the LP Sweeter Sounds in 2001, which includes the single “Lush”. That track gains attention in the New York house scene and is played regularly at Shelter in New York. Another major release is The 10th Chapter, the Rurals’ tenth LP, which appears on the cover of DJ Magazine in January 2008.
Collaborations and solo work
Compton also works with a range of artists and projects outside The Rurals. He collaborates with vocalists and musicians as a solo artist, including Kafele on “Above The Sky” for GOGO Music, Divini on “In Love Again”, and Kafele and Sophia Loren Coffee on “I Don’t Want To See The Sun”. He also releases “Save The Children” and the track “In Time”, which appears with mixes by Richard Earnshaw and The Rurals.
His wider work includes collaborations and performances connected to Motown and the television series Six Feet Under, alongside touring and DJ sets around the world. He is associated with Peng and with his first label, Rural Promotions.
