Andrew White

Andrew White is a Celtic folk guitarist and singer-songwriter from New Zealand. Originally from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, he moves to New Zealand at 16 and builds a reputation there as a guitarist and songwriter. His work is centred on acoustic and Celtic styles.

Recording career

White releases his first album, Conversations, in 1984 and is signed by Narada Records soon afterwards. He records nine albums in total. These include Islands, a collaboration with David Arkenstone, who receives a Grammy nomination in 1995. After a live broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland, he signs with Linn Records and records Guitarra Celtica, an instrumental album of 16 original pieces.

Vocal work and collaborations

His first vocal album, Pray For Rain, includes contributions from Karen Matheson of Capercaillie, Michael McGoldrick of Afro Celt Sound System, and Brendan Power, who has worked with Sting and Ray Charles. The album is released on the Scottish independent label Vertical Records and produced by Donald Shaw, the founder of Capercaillie. White’s playing and vocals are described through this phase as combining different styles.
