Andrew Weatherall is a DJ, producer and remixer from Windsor, United Kingdom, born in 1963 and died in 2020. He is a key figure in UK dance culture and becomes active in the late 1980s, at the start of UK club culture and the rise of acid house.

Early work and Boy’s Own

Weatherall is a founder member of the Boy’s Own fanzine, which documents club culture in sharp, sarcastic terms and sets itself apart from the more idealised language sometimes associated with acid house. The Boy’s Own parties gain a reputation as events for a musically knowledgeable crowd rather than the large-scale rave scene developing at the same time.

Remixing and production

He first reaches a wider audience outside dance music through his remix of Primal Scream’s Loaded, based on I’m Losing More Than I’ll Ever Had. His work with Primal Scream and his production on Screamadelica become some of his best-known contributions. He also produces One Dove’s Morning Dove White, an early post-acid house chill-out record, and makes notable remixes for Stereo MCs, James and Happy Mondays.

Style and clubs

As the 1990s progress, Weatherall avoids the club sound then becoming common in superclubs, instead drawing on a wide range of styles including heavy dub and Detroit electro. He is also associated with club nights such as Sabresonic and Bloodsugar, which become well known in their scene. His own releases and projects are linked to the Sabres of Paradise label.

Groups and side projects

Weatherall works under several group names, including Sabres of Paradise and Two Lone Swordsmen. Other named projects and collaborations connected to him include Lords of Afford, The Hold, Basic Units, Blood Sugar, Deanne Day, Klart, Aramchek, Rude Solo, Frisch und Munter, Bargecharge, Lino Squares, Bocca Juniors and The Woodleigh Research Facility. Later work with his bands extends across trip hop, dub, techno, funk, electro, and also rockabilly and goth rock on The Double Gone Chapel.

Solo releases and later work

His first release under his own name, The Bullet Catcher’s Apprentice, returns to the Balearic approach he has championed since his early London and M25 DJ sets. In 2013 he releases the first album with The Asphodells. He also appears as a regular DJ on NTS.
