Andrea Balency

Andrea Balency is a Franco-Mexican singer, instrumentalist and producer based in London. She works in folk, indie folk and electronic-influenced music, and her releases combine classically trained composition with experimental and sparse arrangements. Her background links Mexico, Paris and London: she first settles in Paris, then moves to London, where she continues to develop her sound.

Early releases and style

Balency’s debut EP, Walls, is released via Bataille in summer 2014. It includes the single “You’ve Never Been Alone” and is produced with Rob McAndrews, known as 1-800 Dinosaur co-founder. She later follows it with the EP Volcano, which shows a more developed vocal approach and a denser relationship between voice and drums. Her songs are described through a process of experimentation and sound-building, with detailed electronic textures and unusual melodies.

Collaborations and performances

She records with a range of other artists and producers. Her credits include vocal work on FKA twigs and We Are Shining’s “Breaks” and on Airhead’s album For Years. Airhead also joins her on production for her work. Balency receives tour support slots with James Blake, Au Revoir Simone, Inc. and Mount Kimbie, and is selected by The Cure for the closing concert of their world tour at the Mexico City stadium, where she performs for a large audience.

Live work and recognition

Her live appearances include festivals such as Calvi On The Rocks, SXSW and Sónar. She also tours with Banks, Metronomy and London Grammar. Balency emerges from the Mexican art-rock scene and is associated with an avant-garde electronic style, with comparisons made to Cocteau Twins, Björk and Jessy Lanza. She is also noted as RBMA-certified.
