Ancestors

Ancestors are a Los Angeles-based group active since 2006. They play doom metal, post-metal and progressive rock, and are also described as a Los Angeles psych-metal act. The band begins as a three-piece project in the summer of 2006, formed by Justin Maranga, Nick Long and Brandon Pierce.

Formation and line-up

After the initial trio forms, the band adds Chico Foley, an Englishman who meets Brandon after moving temporarily to Los Angeles. Jason Christopher Watkins later joins the group, and the band is described as a five-piece ensemble. In 2010, Chico Foley leaves and synth/guitar player Matt Barks joins in his place. The verified line-up lists Daniel Pouliot, Justin Maranga and Jason Watkins.

Releases and collaborators

Ancestors release their debut album in Europe in April 2008 through North Atlantic Sound, a division of Tee Pee Records, and in the United States in August 2008 on Tee Pee Records. The album artwork is produced by Arik Roper, whose work also includes Sleep, High on Fire and Earth. Their second album, Of Sound Mind, appears in October 2009 on Tee Pee Records as a double LP. It is produced by the band and Pete Lyman, with artwork by Derek Albeck. Guest appearances on the album come from David Scott Stone of Melvins, Unwound and Slug, Sera Timms of Black Math Horseman, and cellist Ramiro Zapata.

Invisible White and musical style

In early 2011, the band enters the studio to record the Invisible White EP, which is released later that year on Tee Pee Records. Kenny Woods produces the EP. Their music draws on progressive rock, psychedelic rock, stoner rock and doom metal, and also incorporates experimental music and musique concrète influences. The band does not set out to define a fixed sound when writing.
