Amparanoia

Amparanoia is a Latin group from Madrid, Spain, active between 1996 and 2008. It is the musical project of the Spanish singer Amparo Sánchez, with Dani Tejedor also listed as a member.

Background

Amparo Sánchez is born in Granada in 1970. She begins performing at 16 with her first band, Correcaminos, and later appears occasionally as a singer with blues, jazz, rock and roll, and soul groups. Her early musical outlook is shaped by Billie Holiday, and she is also strongly influenced by black music.

Style and influences

The project is associated with Latin, fusion, world, and patchanka sounds. Manu Chao, described as a friend and a major influence, reacts to Sánchez’s voice by comparing it to a microphone being swallowed as a child. Lee Brillaux of Dr. Feelgood describes her as “the white women with the soul of a black never stop singing”.

Releases

Amparanoia releases La vida te da in 2006, which is identified as the group’s last album.
