American Men is an experimental electro group centred on Claude Speeed. The group is also associated with Scottt Chevrolet, Alilloyd and John Awesome in the bio material, although the verified facts identify Claude Speeed as the member to retain for the group entry.

Style and sound

The project is described as specialising in Miami Lazer Rock, with a sound likened to a city of neon and vice. In its improv drone material, it is said to sound a bit like Tangerine Dream. The tags attached to the act also place it near math rock, post-rock, electronic and indie.

Releases

American Men releases the Cool World EP on LuckyMe. The release is issued alongside a remix record featuring Falty DL, Ikonika & Optimum, Machinedrum and Hudson Mohawke.

Name and background

Several stories are attached to the group’s name. One account says it comes from randomly selecting two pairs of numbers and looking up the corresponding page or word in Gravity’s Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon. Another says the name is chosen because it is statistically unlikely to produce a relevant Google result. A third says it follows a weekend in Barcelona, after which the members wake with no memory of the night before, with only a smashed ouija board and a grainy VHS tape showing underwater pyramids and a pitched-down voice repeating the name. The act is also said to have been called Band Of Garies at first, before adopting the name American Men.
