Amenra

Amenra are a Belgian sludge metal, doom metal, post-hardcore and post-metal group from Kortrijk, Belgium. They form in 1999 and remain active.

Formation and name

The band is founded by vocalist Colin H. van Eeckhout and lead guitarist Mathieu Vandekerckhove, both of whom have previously played in Spineless. They set out to make music with more heart and soul. The name combines the biblical word amen with the Egyptian god Ra.

Style and themes

Amenra begin with sludge and hardcore elements and shorter songs, then move towards a more post-metal direction. Their work often uses quiet clean guitar passages alongside heavy, crushing riffing, with Colin H. van Eeckhout alternating between singing, whispering and harsh screams. Common themes include birth and death, light and darkness, pain and sacrifice, and broader psychological and religious imagery. Van Eeckhout describes himself as agnostic but acknowledges spirituality and religion in the band’s work.

Live performance and presentation

The group is known for intense live performances. Van Eeckhout sings with his back turned towards the audience, which he says shifts attention away from him and towards the rest of the band. He also sometimes performs suspended by hooks attached to his back as part of a cleansing ritual. Amenra also work with visual artists and choreographers, including Willy Vanderperre and Berlinde de Bruyckere.

Releases and musical development

Amenra begin releasing their Mass series in 2003. Mass II marks the point where post-metal elements become more prominent, with the tracks “From Birth to Grave. From Shadow to Light” and “Ritual” signalling that change. By Mass III, the band fully embraces the longer-form approach associated with that sound. In 2013 they join Neurot Records for their fifth full-length album. Their 2021 record De Doorn breaks from the Mass sequence: it is written as a one-off project for special live performances, then becomes a full album. It is also their first release sung entirely in Flemish and their Relapse Records debut after leaving Neurot Recordings.

Current and former members

The group’s line-up includes Kristof Mondy, CHVE, Mathieu Vandekerckhove, Vincent Tetaert, Bjorn Lebon, Maarten Kinet, Lennart Bossu, Levy Seynaeve, Tim De Gieter and Caro Tanghe. Caro Tanghe joins in 2021 as a second vocalist, adding a new dimension to the band’s sound. Lennart Bossu also contributes more actively to the writing of De Doorn, while his work with Oathbreaker shapes the record’s darker mood. Tim De Gieter, Vincent Tetaert, Kristof Mondy, Maarten Kinet and Levy Seynaeve are also associated with earlier or former bass roles in the band.

Musical connections

Colin H. van Eeckhout’s clean vocals are influenced by Maynard James Keenan of Tool, and Amenra openly cover Tool songs on their live acoustic album. Lead guitarist Mathieu Vandekerckhove is self-taught, and many of the band’s signature guitar techniques and riff patterns are developed by him.

Place in heavy music

Amenra become highly influential within atmospheric and post-metal circles, with their distinctive blend of semi-melodic sludge, brooding atmosphere and hard-edged dynamics recognised as especially characteristic of the band.
