ambershift
Ambershift is a Newcastle-based indie rock band formed by Dave Lord in January 2007, with Lord on vocals and bass and Phil Hodgson on drums. The group’s original line-up also includes Andy Wright and Paul Moutter on guitars. Lord starts the band as a New Year’s resolution, and the name comes from drinking sessions on the streets of Newcastle and the banks of the Tyne.
Early recordings
The first line-up records a demo album that is sold at gigs in winter 2007, although it is not otherwise released. One track from that period, “Another Trigger,” appears on the north east compilation Planet Durham, issued in 2008 on the Dot.45 label.
Line-up changes and live shows
After the early period, Andy Wright and Paul Moutter leave the band and are replaced by Andy Green on synths and Ben Clement on guitar. The band plays support slots for Electric Six, Nine Black Alps, Kula Shaker, The Black Velvets, Soho Dolls and The Sea.
Debut album
With the later line-up of Dave Lord, Phil Hodgson, Andy Green and Ben Clement, Ambershift records its debut album at Base HQ studios in Newcastle in January 2009. The album is mixed by Chris Sheldon, whose credits include Therapy, Feeder, Foo Fighters and Biffy Clyro.
Style and reception
The band’s sound is described as gritty indie rock with edgy guitars and a shuffle-driven rhythm. It is also noted for having a distinctive sound and an abrasive edge.
