Allie X is the stage name of Alexandra Ashley Hughes, a singer, songwriter, producer and visual artist. Born in 1985 and associated with Oakville, United States, she develops a form of alternative pop that draws on synth-pop, electropop, new wave, art pop, indie pop, electronica and dance-pop.

Background

Hughes studies classical piano from an early age and later trains in musical theatre. Before using the Allie X name, she releases music under her birth name and performs in the Toronto music scene. Her early work already reflects an interest in theatrical presentation, visual identity and character-led storytelling.

In 2013 she moves to Los Angeles and begins working with producer Cirkut. The project launches in 2014 with Catch, which receives wider attention after support from Katy Perry.

Recordings

CollXtion I and CollXtion II

CollXtion I appears in 2015 as an EP and begins the wider recorded project. It introduces recurring concerns in her work, including identity, desire, alienation and self-construction, and includes Catch, Prime, Bitch and Tumor.

CollXtion II follows in 2017 as her debut studio album. It expands the approach of the earlier release into a more cohesive album format, with songs including Paper Love, Need You, Old Habits Die Hard and Casanova. The album strengthens her reputation for conceptual albums and detailed production.

Super Sunset and Cape God

Super Sunset is released in 2018 and shifts toward a warmer, more nostalgic sound. It draws on 1980s pop, cinematic textures and romantic storytelling, with songs such as Not So Bad in LA, Girl of the Year, Focus and Science. A later analog-inspired reissue extends its retro emphasis.

Cape God follows in 2020 as a concept-led album inspired by a fictional coastal town. It examines wealth, privilege, addiction, power and moral decay, and combines new wave, synth-pop, alternative pop and gothic elements. The album features Troye Sivan on Love Me Wrong and Mitski on Susie Save Your Love, alongside tracks such as Regulars, Fresh Laundry and June Gloom.

Girl With No Face and later work

Girl With No Face appears in 2024. Self-produced, it moves into darker new wave, post-punk, coldwave and synth-pop territory, drawing on underground electronic music from the late 1970s and early 1980s. Black Eye, Off With Her Tits and Galina are among its singles.

Happiness Is Going To Get You follows in 2025 as her fourth studio album. Written largely on piano and self-produced, it contrasts with the colder sound of the previous record and introduces a character called Infant Marie. The album uses baroque instrumentation, chamber-pop and organic songwriting while retaining elements of synth-pop. It includes Is Anybody Out There?, Reunite, 7th Floor, Learn to Cry, It’s Just Light and the title track.

Style and reputation

Allie X is associated with strong visual world-building, detailed songwriting and a focus on artistic independence. She writes for other artists as well as for herself, and her work is recognised for conceptual structure, emotional themes and a willingness to change style from release to release.
