Allegaeon is an American technical and melodic death metal band from Fort Collins, Colorado. The group is active from 2007 and operates in the death metal, melodic death metal, technical death metal and metal genres.
Career
The band forms in 2007 and first plays small venues in and around Fort Collins. It independently releases a self-titled EP in August 2008, then signs to Metal Blade Records. Allegaeon records its debut album, Fragments of Form and Function, in January 2010 and releases it later that year. The second album, Formshifter, is recorded at Lambesis Studios in San Diego in December 2011 and released in 2012.
Its third full-length album, Elements of the Infinite, appears in 2014 and draws notice for its guitar work and orchestral elements. In 2015, original vocalist Ezra Haynes leaves and Riley McShane becomes the new singer. The 2016 album Proponent for Sentience features guest vocals from Björn Strid of Soilwork and guitar work by Benjamin Ellis of Scar Symmetry. Later that year, bassist Corey Archuleta leaves to focus on his law career, and the band sets up a fan club through Patreon to help support its work.
Allegaeon releases a number of covers and videos during this period, including studio play-through videos for “Gray Matter Mechanics,” a cover of Rush’s “Subdivisions,” an official video for “Of Mind and Matrix,” and in 2018 a cover of Rush’s “Animate,” recorded during the Proponent for Sentience sessions. The band also tours Europe in 2018 with Ne Obliviscaris.
In 2019, Allegaeon announces Apoptosis with the single “Stellar Tidal Disruption,” and the album is released later that year. It also releases a cover of Yes’s “Roundabout” in 2020. In 2021, the band announces Damnum with the single “Into Embers”; the album follows in 2022 and is later named by Loudwire among the top 50 rock and metal albums of the year. Riley McShane leaves in 2022, Ezra Haynes returns for a European tour, and by 2023 he is back in the band permanently.
The group issues “Inhumation” in 2023 and “Iridescent” in 2024, then tours North America on the Cancer Culture Over North America Tour 2024 with Decapitated, Septicflesh and Kataklysm. In 2025 it releases “Driftwood” and the album The Ossuary Lens.
