Alex Highton
Alex Highton is an English singer-songwriter whose work spans folk, singer-songwriter and electropop. Raised in Liverpool, he later spends around ten years in London before moving with his family to rural Cambridgeshire, where he lives in Woodditton. His songs often reflect that move from city to country life, drawing on domestic life, family and the landscape around him.
Recordings and releases
Highton’s debut album, Woodditton Wives Club, is released on The Local Label in 2012. It is recorded at Andy Ramsay’s studio in South London with Jonny Bridgwood on double bass and Howard Monk on drums. The album leads to praise for its songcraft, arrangements and clear focus on everyday observation.
His second album, Nobody Knows Anything, appears on Gare Du Nord Records. It continues his interest in layered songwriting and experimental detail, and is described through reviews as an album that combines playful ideas, carefully built arrangements, catchy riffs, layered vocals, piano and other shifting sounds.
Style and recognition
Highton is associated with gentle folk songwriting and a warm, soulful vocal style, while also being linked to songs that avoid easy categorisation. His writing is noted for being observant and personal, with material that traces his own move from the city to the countryside and the change in outlook that comes with it.
