Alex Cameron is an Australian musician, singer and songwriter from Sydney. He works in indie and related pop and rock styles, and is best known for a solo career built around a high-concept persona as a failed entertainer.

Career

Cameron begins as a member of the electronica group Seekae, with whom he releases three studio albums before recording under his own name. As a solo artist, he often performs with saxophonist and business partner Roy Molloy.

Solo releases

He independently releases his debut album, Jumping the Shark, online in 2013. The record is later reissued by Secretly Canadian in 2016, reaching a wider audience and a growing cult following.

His second album, Forced Witness, appears in 2017 and marks a move away from the mostly electronic sound of the debut. Jonathan Rado of Foxygen produces the album, which uses a fuller band arrangement and includes Molloy on saxophone.

Miami Memory follows in 2019. In 2022, Cameron releases Oxy Music, which features Lloyd Vines and Jason Williamson of Sleaford Mods. That album draws on the opioid epidemic and Nico Walker’s novel Cherry.

Collaborations

Cameron co-writes five tracks on The Killers’ fifth studio album, Wonderful Wonderful, and later co-writes four songs on their sixth album, Imploding the Mirage. Brandon Flowers appears on the closing track of Forced Witness, “Politics of Love”. Cameron also releases a cover of Paul Kelly’s “Before Too Long” in 2020.

Songwriting approach

His work is shaped by fictional characters and altered personas, with his solo material often presented as a narrative project rather than straightforward autobiography. Oxy Music is described in terms of a story told largely from a man’s perspective, centred on confusion, purpose, and survival.
