Agrikulture
Agrikulture is an Indonesian electronic group from Jakarta, active since 2003. The group includes Aditya Permana, Hogi Wirjono, Emil Pahlevi, Fandy DFMC, Dipha Barus and Ade Koestomo.
Style and approach
The group combines retro-modern electronic sounds with rock, funk and soul rhythms. Their performances and recordings also use decks, effects, live synthesis and sampling, giving their music a live, hybrid format. The group’s work sits within Indonesian electronic music, with associations in the input to black metal, post-black metal, blackgaze and electronic styles as tags.
Career and collaborations
Agrikulture begins as a project formed by Anton Wirjono, also known as DJ Anton, and DJ Aditya. They start out remixing influential Indonesian pop bands and playing live sets in clubs. After Hogi returns from San Francisco with production experience, the project develops further. The group becomes known for a charting remix of Disko Di Rumah and for visually striking live performances.
They collaborate and perform with a wide range of Indonesian artists, including Slank, Indra Lesmana & Reborn, Kris Dayanti, RIF, Ari Lasso, Syaharani, Shanty, and Maliq and D’essentials. They also serve as the opening act for The Prodigy and represent Indonesia at the Good Vibrations Festival in Singapore alongside the Beastie Boys and Cut Copy.
Recognition
Agrikulture is voted Best Live PA in 2004 and 2006 by PARANOIA, the HardRock FM Jakarta on-air programme. They also receive nominations for Best Alternative and Best Dance at the Anugerah Musik Indonesia Awards in 2006.
Releases and live format
The group recruits new members for a later live format, including lead vocalist Irfandy, described as an icon in the indie scene, and award-winning MC Emil Pahlevi on guitars. This line-up is presented with visual artistry as part of a new stage direction. Their album is issued in Indonesia through Aquarius Musikindo and produced by Future10 Music.
