Afrikan Sciences is the recording name of Eric Douglas Porter, a United States-based self-taught multi-instrumentalist working in experimental electronic music. His output draws on broken beat, house, techno, future jazz and breakbeats, with a focus on rhythmically complex and layered composition.

Music and style

His work is associated with modern experimental composition and with broad, exploratory sound design. The music uses West London broken beat as one starting point, alongside house and techno, and is often described through the lens of Afrofuturism. It emphasises dense rhythm, sonic texture and a wide range of influences rather than a fixed style.

Collaborations and projects

Porter co-pilots the electronic label Deepblak, which is founded by Aybee, also known as ArmonBazile, in Oakland. His work with Aybee contrasts Porter’s more eclectic approach with Aybee’s more direct deconstruction of 4/4 music. He also works as part of Les Graciés and the WOOD // WORK Collective, where he continues to develop collaborative music.

Approach

Afrikan Sciences is presented as an outsider figure who pushes against musical convention and the limits of expression.
