ADULT.

ADULT. is a Detroit electronic group formed in 1998. The duo consists of Nicola Kuperus and Adam Lee Miller, and they work with vocals, drum machines, analog synthesizers and other electronic and punk elements. The group first releases material under the name Plasma Co. before using ADULT. as its main name.

Formation and membership

ADULT. begins as a secretive project with the members initially unrevealed. It is later known as a husband-and-wife partnership between visual artist Nicola Kuperus and Adam Lee Miller, who is formerly of Le Car. In 2005, the group announces a brief expansion to a trio with guitarist Samuel Consiglio, who later leaves.

Releases, label and activity

Kuperus and Miller found the Ersatz Audio record label, which becomes closely associated with their work. The group releases material independently in its early years and builds a reputation through extensive touring in the United States. Later releases are distributed by Thrill Jockey Records.

Collaborations and related work

ADULT. remixes artists including Felix da Housecat, Fischerspooner and Bis. Kuperus also contributes vocals to recordings by Death In Vegas, Swayzak and Chicks On Speed, and she is responsible for the band’s artwork and photography. The group tours with Trans Am in 2002 and plays its first headlining American tour in May 2003, followed by dates in Europe.

Style

The group is associated with electroclash, electropunk and synth-pop, with a sound that draws on electro, electronic and synth-based elements from Detroit’s independent music scene.
