Adeva

Adeva is the stage name of Patricia Daniels, an American house and R&B singer from Paterson, New Jersey. Born in 1960, she develops her voice in her church choir, where she sings as a member and later works as a director and vocal coach. She begins singing professionally in the mid-1980s.

Recording career

Her first single, In and Out of My Life, appears in 1988 on Easy Street Records. Later that year she signs to the UK label Cooltempo, part of EMI, and releases a house version of Otis Redding’s Respect, which reaches number 17 in the UK.

Her debut album, Adeva!, follows in 1989 and reaches number 6 on the UK Albums Chart, where it is certified Platinum. Alongside Respect, it includes the singles Warning! and I Thank You, both of which also reach number 17 in the UK, and Musical Freedom, which reaches number 22. The album is issued in the United States in 1990 on Capitol Records, with Warning! becoming a Top 10 Dance Chart hit there.

Later albums and collaborations

Her second album, Love or Lust?, appears in 1991 but does not chart in the UK or the US. It includes two US dance hits: Independent Woman, which reaches number 7, and It Should Have Been Me, which reaches number 1. She is dropped by Cooltempo in 1992.

In 1995 she collaborates with house producer Frankie Knuckles on the album Welcome to the Real World. The release produces two UK Top 40 singles: Too Many Fish, which reaches number 34 in the UK and number 1 on the US Hot Dance Club Songs chart, and Whadda U Want (From Me), which reaches number 36 in the UK and number 3 on the US dance chart.

Later work

Her third album, New Direction, is released in 1997 on Distinct'ive Records and does not achieve commercial success. It includes Where Is The Love? / The Way That You Feel, which reaches number 54 in the UK.

Her 1988 recording In and Out of My Life is later sampled by other artists, including OnePhatDeeva in 1999, and by Radical Noiz and Eric Prydz in 2003 and 2004. She also appears on the 2004 single Wish I Never Knew by Slippery People. She continues to perform live occasionally.
