A Thousand Horses

A Thousand Horses is a US country and southern rock group from Nashville, Tennessee, active since 2010. The band’s core lineup includes Michael Hobby on lead vocals, Bill Satcher on lead guitar and Graham Deloach on bass and vocals, with Zach Brown on guitar and vocals as a member until 2023. The group also includes Zach Brown, Graham Deloach, Michael Hobby and Bill Satcher in its current membership.

Origins and early releases

Michael Hobby and Bill Satcher grow up in Newberry, South Carolina and begin writing songs together at 15. Graham Deloach, who is from Savannah, Georgia and is Satcher’s cousin, joins them soon after. Zach Brown, an Atlanta native, is later introduced by a friend, and the four-piece becomes A Thousand Horses. The band’s name comes from a song on its first EP.

The band’s debut EP, A Thousand Horses, is released in 2010. It is recorded in six days in Silver Lake, California with producer Dave Cobb and first appears on Interscope Records, though it is also associated with Republic Nashville in the band’s discography. The song “Suicide Eyes” from the EP is later featured in the film Footloose.

Breakthrough and albums

In 2014, A Thousand Horses signs with Republic Nashville, part of Big Machine Label Group, and releases “Smoke”, the single that brings the band wider attention. The song reaches number one on Country Airplay and becomes the first country group debut single to reach that position since Zac Brown Band’s “Chicken Fried”. It also sets a record for the highest debut by a new act on the Country Aircheck radio chart, opening at number 28. The single also charts on Hot Country Songs.

The band’s debut full-length album, Southernality, follows in 2015 on Republic Nashville. Its singles include “Smoke”, “(This Ain’t No) Drunk Dial” and the title track. The album receives generally positive reviews for its vocals, lyrics and blend of country and rock. A live version of “Smoke”, recorded in Printer’s Alley, appears on the band’s later releases.

In 2017, A Thousand Horses releases the deluxe EP Bridges on Nashville Harbor Records & Entertainment, with production by Dann Huff and Corey Crowder. The group says it keeps its sound intact while working with outside writers around Nashville as well as writing its own songs.

After Zach Brown leaves in 2023 to spend more time with family, the remaining three members later release The Outside on Highway Sound Records.

Style and reception

A Thousand Horses describes its music as a mix of classic rock, country, American rock, soul and blues. Its sound is compared with Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Allman Brothers, the Black Crowes and the Rolling Stones in a modern country setting. Michael Hobby’s songwriting is rooted in the work of Dwight Yoakam and Tom Petty.

The band tours nationally and receives attention for its live performances. At Austin City Limits in 2014, Rolling Stone highlights the group as a strong emerging act, noting its energy, stage presence and live performance.
