A Forest of Stars

A Forest of Stars is an English avant-garde metal band from Leeds, United Kingdom, active since 2007. The group plays black metal with atmospheric, progressive, experimental, psychedelic and folk influences, drawing in elements of post-rock and psychedelic rock alongside its metal base. It is known for a Victorian aesthetic and for lyrics with an otherworldly, surreal tone.

Albums and recordings

The band makes its debut with The Corpse of Rebirth, then follows it with Opportunistic Thieves of Spring, A Shadowplay for Yesterdays, Beware the Sword You Cannot See, and Grave Mounds and Grave Mistakes. Its discography is built around full-length releases rather than singles or extended runs of other formats.

Style and associations

A Forest of Stars belongs to the Triskalyon circle/collective in 2006 and 2007, alongside acts including Azag-Thoth, Dark Forest, Darklink, Death Kvlt, Gallia Fornax, Havarax, Monarque, Mortifier, Sinful Dimentia, Soufferance, Terrorist, Throne of Mortality, Unkwiss, Vision Eternel, Vision Funeral Doom, Vision Lunar, Vision Pariah and Vision Solitude. Members of the band also play or have played in The Water Witch, an English band with a similar style and aesthetic.

The group’s members include Mr. T.S. Kettleburner, The Gentleman, Gareth Hodgson, Oliver Jessop, Sir Gastrix Grimshaw, Henry Hyde Bronsdon, Mike Midgley, Mister Curse and Katie Stone. The band’s earlier line-ups also include Katheryne, Queen of the Ghosts, Mr John “The Resurrectionist” Bishop and Titus Lungbutter, with roles across vocals, violin, flute, synths, pianoforte, percussion, guitar, bass and drums.
