36?
36? is a Canadian alt-rock band from Calgary. The project begins in 2006 as a solo outlet for Taylor Cochrane, then a teenager, before developing into a full band. Its sound draws on indie rock, moody atmospherics and a dense psychedelic wall of sound, with influences taken from across different styles of music.
Formation and development
The act starts as Cochrane’s solo project and, after several years and three self-produced albums, expands into a band with Mike Malkin and Scott White. The group then performs live, releases an online EP built around Cochrane’s recent recordings, and tours Western Canada. After returning home, Ryan Kusz joins, and the band begins work on a full-length album.
Releases
The album Where Do We Go From Here? is released in 2014 after about a year in production. It receives strong responses from local radio, newspapers and music blogs. The project later prepares a follow-up album titled reprise.
Style and reception
36? is associated with alt-rock, with songs described through a mix of sugary indie-rock, dark soundscapes and psychedelic intensity. The group’s recorded work is noted in Calgary media for its ambitious, layered character.
