311 is an alternative rock group from Omaha, United States, active since 1988. The line-up consists of Nick Hexum, S.A. Martinez, Tim Mahoney, Chad Sexton and P-Nut.

Style and sound

The band combines alternative rock, funk rock, rap rock, reggae, reggae rock and rock, and is also associated with ska and alternative rock. Their music blends rock, reggae, hip-hop and funk, with a mix of harder songs and more melodic reggae-based material. The group is also identified with themes of unity and positivity in its lyrics and live performances.

Career and recordings

311 forms in Omaha and later bases itself in Los Angeles, California. It releases ten studio albums, one live album, one greatest hits album and three DVDs. The band sells more than 8.5 million albums in the United States, and eight of its albums reach the Top 10 on Billboard’s Top 200 Sales Chart. Nine singles reach the Top 10 on Billboard’s Alternative Rock Radio Chart, including the number one singles “Down”, “Love Song” and “Don’t Tread On Me”, as well as “Amber”, “All Mixed Up”, “Come Original”, “Creatures (For a While)”, “Hey You” and “Sunset in July”.

Live reputation and events

After years of touring, 311 develops a reputation as one of the most influential and entertaining live bands in the United States. Its annual summer headlining run, the Unity Tour, begins in 2004 and becomes one of the largest modern rock concert tours of the season. Previous Unity Tour support acts include Sublime with Rome, The Offspring, Snoop Dogg, The Roots, Papa Roach, The Wailers, O.A.R., Matisyahu and Ziggy Marley, while earlier tours feature support from acts such as No Doubt, Korn and Incubus before they become major headliners.

3-11 Day

Every other year on 11 March, 311 holds a special 311 Day concert event with an extended setlist and large-scale production, drawing fans from across the United States and other countries. Nick Hexum typically ends shows with the phrase “Stay Positive and Love Your Life.”
