1914

1914 is a Ukrainian black metal group from Lviv, active since 2014. Its music is built around the First World War, with a focus on combat, trench warfare, fear, hopelessness and death, rather than politics or propaganda. The subject matter includes the Battle of Gallipoli and Atatürk’s involvement, the Brusilov Offensive, the Battle of Verdun, the gas attack at Ypres, the Christmas truce, the bombing of London by German Zeppelins, the winter fighting in the Carpathians, and the wider war between the German and Austro-Hungarian armies and Russian forces.

The group presents its members under wartime military ranks and divisions. The vocals are credited to Ditmar Kumar of the 2nd Division, Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 147, as an Oberleutnant. The guitars are credited to Liam Fessen of the 37th Division, Feldartillerie-Regiment Nr. 73, as a Wachtmeister, and Vitalis Winkelhock of the 5th Division, Ulanen-Regiment Nr. 3, as a Sergeant. The bass is credited to Armin von Heinessen of the 9th Division, Grenadier-Regiment Nr. 7, as an Unteroffizier, and the drums to Rusty Potoplacht of the 33rd Division, 7th Thueringisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 96, as a Gefreiter.
