wooze
wooze are a Brixton-based duo formed in 2018, made up of Jamie She and Skinship. They begin as part of the Brixton Muddy Yard Collective and write their early material in a studio they build in a disused builder’s depot. Their debut single, “Hello Can You Go”, comes from this period, and they play a series of introductory shows in London before travelling to Seoul to film the song’s video with K-pop director Nuri Jeong.
Sound and style
The group describe their music as “Pansori for the 21st Century”, referring to a traditional Korean form combining drumming and sung storytelling, and also as “baroque ’n’ roll”. Their sound draws on 1970s new wave, 1980s synth pop and 1990s hard rock. The name wooze comes from a phonetic translation of the Korean word for “space”, taken after the prominent 1990s band.
Releases
In 2022, wooze release their third EP, The Magnificent Eleven. The record continues the band’s development and includes hard rock elements inspired by AC/DC as well as 1970s action cartoon themes.
