N-Type

N-Type is a dubstep DJ, producer and label owner from Croydon, United Kingdom. He is associated with dubstep, jungle and UK garage, and he also works under the labels Wheel & Deal Records and his own imprint Terrain Records.

Early career and radio work

He starts mixing drum and bass in the late 1990s at the age of 14, then moves towards darker 2-step garage as his musical focus develops. He begins presenting an underground chart show on Delight FM with DJ Walsh, later running two drivetime shows a week with Walsh before taking a weekend chart show as a solo broadcaster. Before moving to Rinse FM, he establishes himself as a regular name on Delight FM and also appears on other pirate and internet stations.

On Rinse FM, he presents a Sunday night show focused on dubstep dubplates. His mix compilations also receive radio play, which helps to build his profile and lead to bookings in England and overseas.

Production and releases

N-Type turns more strongly towards production and releases his first sold-out track, “Square Off,” in 2005 on Southside Dubstars. He also signs tracks to Dub Police, Southside and Tempa, and continues issuing material on Terrain Records. His track “Tolerance” receives BBC Radio 1 play from Mary Anne Hobbs and appears on the Tempa Allstars EP.

Residencies and collaborations

He holds resident positions at FWD>> in Shoreditch and Destructive, and he is also one of the DJs on rotation at DMZ. He plans releases with artists including Benga, Skream, Omen, Ironsoul, Kromestar, Cess and Walsh.
