Minas

Minas is a Brazilian jazz group from Winston-Salem, United States, active since 1978. The core members are Orlando Haddad and Patricia King.

Background

The group forms in 1978, when Haddad and King are students at the North Carolina School of the Arts. Their music combines Brazilian traditions such as samba, bossa nova, baião and axé with American jazz, blues and folk, alongside classical music.

Style and work

Minas draws on both Brazilian and North American traditions and is described as blending north and south in its sound. The group has several decades of experience performing and recording.

Recognition and performances

Minas receives three Grammy nominations for its 2009 album Bossa Nova Day. The group also performs at major venues including Lincoln Center in New York, the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, and the Kimmel and Mann Centers in Philadelphia.
