Mercury is a name used by several acts across rock, house, metal, pop and rap. The input here contains information on a Nashville alternative rock band, a Swiss house duo, a Pittsburgh rock band, a South Korean girl group, a Cleveland heavy metal band, and a rapper from Atlanta. It also identifies Mercury as a polish rap artist.
House duo
One Mercury is a two-person house act made up of Mel and Simon. Mel is a former hip-hop DJ with an interest in gay rock music and ethno-influenced 1980s synthesizer pop. Simon is a drummer with a strong connection to early post-millennium UK 2-step. Together they produce neoclassic house, described in the input as soulful, sometimes gospel-influenced, percussion-led and bass-driven, with a vintage feel. The act has prominent releases on Gomma.
Pittsburgh rock band
Another Mercury is a rock band from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The lineup is listed as Justin on vocals and guitar, Eric on guitar and vocals, Adam on drums, and Kurt on bass. The band releases a self-titled album and a debut CD that draws attention from press and radio across the northeast. Its songs include “Superhero,” “Falling Star,” and “Ghosts & Angels,” and the band is noted for its live show and a hard-working approach.
South Korean girl group
Mercury (머큐리) is also the name of a South Korean girl group debuted by Gaon Entertainment. The group starts with HanBit, HyeNa and SeHee, and debuts with the song “Do not Stop,” produced by OTHANKQ. SeoA later joins the group ahead of a comeback. The group name is also given in Korean as 머큐리.
Heavy metal band from Cleveland
Mercury is a heavy metal band formed in Cleveland, Ohio in 1988 and active until 1993. The band contributes “Echoes In The Night” to the compilation Distant Thunder: Sounds Of The Cleveland Metal Storm. It performs regularly with other local bands including BeyonDévon, Mutant Soldier, H.A.T.E., Nitefall, Vatican, Bison, Lanz End and Medalyon.
After a six-month break to look for a second guitarist, Mercury adds Byron Nemeth from Sacred Heart and Mayhem in the summer of 1989. The band records a two-song promo tape in September, then loses drummer David Davison, who is replaced by David Davies. It announces its return in Heavy Metal Demolition zine issue 34 in July 1990, with a feature, interview and new promotional photo. Its live comeback takes place at The Phantasy Theater in Cleveland on 13 July 1990, alongside Raging Grace, Breaker, Nitefall and H.A.T.E., and the show receives positive reviews in local zines. After Byron Nemeth leaves in March 1991, Mercury continues as a four-piece and returns to headline shows in Cleveland on 14 and 15 March 1991. The band releases its demo Mercury in 1991 in a limited run of 1,000 copies, with a release party at The Phantasy Theater. Interest grows outside the United States as well, including a three-page feature in the German heavy metal zine Heavy oder Was? in spring 1992. Mercury splits in early 1993 after writing material for around three albums, including unreleased songs such as “Tonight,” “Wings Of Steel,” “Inside Me” and “One Last Kiss.” Its listed discography includes Basement Demo 1988, Promotional Demo 1989 and the 1991 demo Mercury.
