Marc Anthony is a singer, songwriter, actor, record producer and television producer from New York, United States. Born Marco Antonio Muñiz in New York City, he grows up in a Puerto Rican family in East Harlem, also known as Spanish Harlem and El Barrio. His parents name him after the Mexican singer Marco Antonio Muñiz. He is raised Roman Catholic and is the youngest of eight surviving children.
Music career
Anthony begins his recording career with English-language dance music known as freestyle. His first album, When the Night is Over, appears in 1991. He then establishes himself in salsa with a run of albums in the 1990s, especially Otra Nota, Todo a Su Tiempo and Contra La Corriente. These releases make him one of the leading figures in the genre and a major live draw, including at Madison Square Garden and other international venues.
He records in Latin, salsa, ballad and pop styles, and is closely associated with Latin pop and tropical salsa. His 1995 album Todo a su tiempo receives a Grammy nomination and includes songs such as “Te Conozco Bien”, “Hasta Ayer”, “Nadie Como Ella”, “Se Me Sigue Olvidando”, “Te Amare” and “Llegaste A Mi”.
Recognition
Anthony is a two-time Grammy Award winner and a five-time Latin Grammy Award winner. He sells more than 12 million albums worldwide and holds a Guinness World Record for best-selling tropical/salsa artist as well as for the most number-one albums on the Billboard Tropical Albums year-end charts. He also receives the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute Chair’s Award and the CHCI Chair’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009.
Personal life
He marries Jennifer Lopez in 2004, and they have twins, Max David and Emme Marbiel Muñiz-Lopez, in 2007.
