Black Gold

Black Gold is a Brooklyn-based indie rock group that begins in 2006 and is active from 2007 onward. The project centres on Eric Ronick, with the group also linked to Than Luu, Siggy and Alistair Paxton. It forms in Brooklyn, where the band sets up at Thinman Studios after touring and starts writing and recording.

Formation and line-up

The group begins as a collaboration between Eric Ronick, who also works with Panic! at the Disco and Ambulance Ltd., and Than Luu, who has worked with M. Ward, Rachel Yamagata and shushshush. The lineup is completed by guitarist Alistair Paxton, associated with The Metronomes and Stapleton, and bassist Siggy, whose credits include POE, Panic channel, powerman5000 and Justin Timberlake.

Style and sound

Black Gold’s music is described as drawing on a wide range of influences, including T-Rex, Satie, Chic, Quincy Jones-era Michael Jackson, Bowie, the Brothers Gibb and the Band. The group is tagged as indie, alternative, indie rock, rock and funk, with indie rock as the main genre classification.

There is also a separate boogie and post-disco act called Black Gold, centred on Arlene Gold, Don Casale and John Robie, which has club success with “C’mon Stop” in 1983 on Prelude Records.
