Ash

Ash is a Northern Ireland alternative rock band from Downpatrick, active since 1989. The group forms around Tim Wheeler on vocals and guitar, Mark Hamilton on bass guitar, and Rick McMurray on drums, with Charlotte Hatherley later joining on guitar.

Formation and early releases

The band forms in 1992 in Downpatrick and first reaches wider attention as part of the Britpop wave, although its sound sits more broadly within alternative rock and indie rock. Its debut mini album, Trailer, appears in 1994, followed by the full-length debut 1977 in 1996. The title refers both to the members’ birth year and to the year Star Wars is released, reflecting the band’s interest in science fiction and extra-terrestrial themes.

Line-up changes and albums

Charlotte Hatherley joins in autumn 1997 after being recruited from Nightnurse, turning the group into a quartet. The follow-up album Nu-Clear Sounds is released in 1998 and meets a mixed critical response. Free All Angels follows in 2001, and receives a U.S. release the following summer. Meltdown, the band’s first Stateside release for Record Collection, arrives in 2005. Hatherley leaves in 2006 after nine years with the band to focus on her solo work, though the departure is amicable and the members say they remain open to her return.

Return to the trio and later work

In 2007, Wheeler, Hamilton and McMurray return to the original trio line-up for Twilight of the Innocents. In 2009 the band launches the A-Z Series, a project of 26 singles released across a year, one for each letter of the alphabet, with one release every fortnight. This run includes Return of White Rabbit as a free download and True Love 1980 through the band’s own subscription service and label, Atomic Heart Records. The project is followed by the A to Z Tour, which takes the band around the UK, from Aldershot to Zennor. In 2010, Bloc Party guitarist Russell Lissack joins Ash for live performances while his band is on hiatus.

Style

Ash is associated with alternative rock, Britpop, indie rock, pop punk, post-britpop and power pop. Its early mainstream profile is tied to the Britpop label, but its catalogue also shows a continuing interest in energetic guitar rock and concept-driven release formats.
