Saint Etienne
Saint Etienne are an English indie pop and electronic group from Croydon, formed in 1990. The line-up consists of Sarah Cracknell, Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs. The band is named after a French football team.
Formation and line-up
The group is founded by journalist Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs in Croydon. After recording two singles with guest singers, Sarah Cracknell joins as a full member. Stanley and Wiggs are both based in the Croydon area, and Cracknell is from Chelmsford, Essex.
Style
Saint Etienne are associated with indie dance and indie pop, and are also grouped with alternative dance, dance-pop, downtempo, dream pop and house. Their music combines dance-pop production with indie songwriting, including lyrics and self-aware production, and they are described as one of the acts that help define the early 1990s indie dance scene.
