A new membership-based festival model called Grassroots Rising is being trialled as a solution for the struggling music industry. The initiative aims to address financial challenges and empower members to choose festival artists.
New Membership Model for Music Festivals
A new membership-based festival model is being trialled as a possible solution for an industry facing financial challenges. Grassroots Rising, set to launch next year, is the brainchild of Bristol venue Chai Wallahs.
Support from Industry Stakeholders
The initiative has garnered support from the Music Venues Trust, venues, promoters, and artists nationwide. This new model aims to reduce running costs for independent festivals and make tickets more affordable.
Impact of Industry Challenges
The UK lost 78 festivals in 2024, more than double the number from the previous year. Grassroots Rising aims to address the imbalance between commercially supported and non-supported artists.
Promoting Emerging Artists
Mark Davyd, CEO of Music Venues Trust, emphasized the importance of fostering platforms for emerging artists and supporting grassroots venues nationally.
Positive Reception from Save Our Scene
George Fleming, founder of Save Our Scene, expressed support for Grassroots Rising and highlighted the dedication of those organizing festivals in the current climate.
Membership Details
Music fans will be able to purchase memberships through a crowdfunder and have a say in selecting artists for the festival lineup. Membership opens in September, and the festival is scheduled for June 2026 in Cambridgeshire.
