Relentless Boardmasters 2011 kicks of with a lay d

Fistral Beach, Newquay – England (Wednesday, August 10, 2011) – The ASP 6-Star Relentless Boardmasters in assoc. with Vans was forced to call a lay day due to incontestable conditions.

Small 1-2ft wind-swept waves trickled in at Fistral beach and after waiting to see if the push of the incoming tide improved swell quality, event officials were forced to call off proceedings on Day 2 of competition.

A promising forecast is showing for the remainder of the official waiting period and Relentless Boardmasters in assoc. with Vans contest director Dave Reed is confident of getting the surfers into better quality waves for the following rounds of competition.

“The swell forecast for the remainder of the week seems to be quite solid. Thursday and Friday seem to be the better of the days so we are going to maximize our surfing through those two days. We are fortunate that we are blessed with a good swell forecast and although the conditions might just about be contestable I think it is best to wait and give the surfers the best opportunity to surf the best waves we get during the contest.”

This year’s edition of the Relentless Boardmasters in assoc. with Vans is running a complete 144 man format with a stacked field of International surfers including recent US Open runner-up and current ASP World ranked nº27 Yadin Nicol (Sunshine Coast, AUS) 26, and US Open semi-finalist wonder kid, Kolohe Andino (San Clemente, CA) 17, both of whom are expected to compete in Round Two of competition.

“I think we are seeing the strongest field of competitors we have ever seen here at Newquay to be honest since the original days of the Boardmasters,” continued Reed. “Obviously we are seeing the richest prize money ever given and we are not conflicting with other events so there is an opportunity for surfers to come here and compete and hopefully we will see some of the best surfing we have ever seen at Fistral beach”

The ASP 3-Star Tuaca Longboard Pro and the ASP 6-Star Tuaca Ladies Longboard Pro are also new additions to this year’s Relentless Boardmasters in assoc. with Vans surf festival. After an amazing opening day of competition where Europe’s and a handful of the world’s best longboarders thrilled the crowds lining the shores with an incredible display of longboard surfing.

“We actually do have a number of good longboarders in the UK,” stated Reed. “So for this festival to represent those longboarders, the likes of Ben Skinner, Adam Griffiths and Ben Howey then it gives them an opportunity to have a stage to perform to show how good they are and compete against some good longboard surfers coming in Internationally to Fistral beach.”

A first call at 07h30 will be made and if conditions allow heat nº21 of Round One of the Relentless Boardmasters in assoc. with Vans will kick off the action for the day with competition expected to run well into Round Two of the event.

Surfers competing in the Relentless Boardmasters in assoc. with Vans are out to gain valuable ranking points in their bid to climb the ASP World rankings and enter the elite Top 32 before the mid-year points cut off. European athletes are also building on their ASP European Men’s ranking as the main summer leg of events commences. Meanwhile the ASP 3-Star Tuaca Longboard Pro and the ASP 6-Star Tuaca Ladies Longboard Pro have decided semi-finalists and the crowning of the longboard champions will take place later in the week.

The Relentless Boardmasters in assoc. with Vans is scheduled from August 9-14, 2011.
