Scratch Perverts are a London-based turntablist collective that forms in 1996 and remains active. The group works in dance, electronica, hip-hop, breakbeat and breaks, and is known for DJ performance, scratching and competition turntablism.

Formation and membership

The group forms in London in 1996. It initially consists of Tony Vegas, Renegade, First Rate and Mr. Thing. It later expands to an eight-member crew with the addition of Prime Cuts, Harry Love, Killa Kela and DJ Plus One. The line-up then contracts after a short split in 2000, when the group reforms with Tony Vegas, Prime Cuts and DJ Plus One. The current membership includes Tony Vegas, DJ First Rate, DJ Plus One, DJ Prime Cuts and Mr. Thing.

Competition record

Scratch Perverts build a reputation as one of the most influential turntablist groups. They are credited with developing new techniques and extending what is possible on the turntable. The group wins two consecutive World DMC Team titles. Prime Cuts also wins two consecutive World ITF titles, and Plus One wins both the World DMC Champion and World Vestax Champion titles. After becoming dominant on the battle circuit, the group retires from competition.

Recording and DJ work

After stepping back from battling, Scratch Perverts focus more on making their own music. Their approach to hip-hop is broad rather than tied to a single style, and their work draws on a wide range of influences, including Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, Dillinja, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Aphex Twin. They are also noted for bringing drum and bass into turntablism, and this music features heavily in their DJ sets.

Collaborations and live activity

As recording artists, they collaborate with drum and bass producers Ed Rush and Optical on the track “Get Ill”. They continue to DJ, hold a residency at Fabric in London, and play festivals and club nights internationally.
