Róisín Murphy

Róisín Murphy is an Irish singer and songwriter from Arklow, County Wicklow. She is known for work in electronic, dance and pop music, and first gains wider recognition as the lead vocalist of the UK electronic duo Moloko, formed in 1995 with Mark Brydon.

Early work with Moloko

Murphy fronts Moloko in the 1990s and becomes associated with the duo’s electronic sound. Her name is pronounced “roe-sheen”.

Solo career

She records her first official solo material in 2004 with producer Matthew Herbert, who has previously remixed Moloko. Her debut solo album, Ruby Blue, appears in 2005 on Echo Records in the UK. The album includes the singles “If We’re In Love” and “Sow Into You”.

Her second album, Overpowered, is released in 2007 and includes the singles “Overpowered”, “Let Me Know”, “You Know Me Better” and “Movie Star”. “Let Me Know” is produced by Groove Armada. Overpowered receives a nomination for the Choice Music Prize in the Republic of Ireland and places at number 30 on Metacritic’s best albums of 2007 list with a score of 82.

Collaborations and other appearances

Murphy contributes vocals to recordings by other artists, including Handsome Boy Modeling School and Boris Dlugosch. She sings on Dlugosch’s track “Never Enough”, which becomes a club hit. Her version of Bryan Ferry’s “Slave to Love” appears in a 2008 Gucci commercial starring James Franco.

Personal life

Murphy gives birth to her first child, a daughter named Clodagh, in 2009.
