Barnsley Folk Festival 2026

Barnsley Folk Festival returns from 29-31 May 2026, taking place at Barnsley Civic on 46 Eldon Street, South Yorkshire. This three-day event celebrates Yorkshire’s folk music, dance, and community spirit in Barnsley town centre.

Music and Performances

The festival opens on Friday 29 May with a headline concert by folk icon Kate Rusby at Barnsley Civic’s theatre. The evening features a mix of established and emerging folk artists from local and national scenes. Saturday evening continues with a showcase concert presenting diverse folk talent, including bands and singer-songwriters.

Outdoor Family Celebration

On Saturday 30 May, Mandela Gardens hosts a free, family-friendly event from 11am to 4pm, featuring live music, dancing, and performances by Morris and sword-dance teams in traditional costume. Workshops and storytelling for children will also be available, alongside food stalls and a licensed bar creating a relaxed festival atmosphere.

Folk Dance Ceilidh

The festival concludes on Sunday 31 May with a ceilidh at Barnsley Civic from 1pm to 3pm. Open to all, the dance session includes live music and guidance from a caller, welcoming both beginners and experienced dancers. Local dance teams will also showcase traditional steps to end the weekend on a high note.

For visitors using public transport, Barnsley is well connected. Barnsley Interchange (combining the train station and main bus depot) is only a short walk from 46 Eldon Street. Northern Rail trains run regularly between Barnsley and regional hubs like Sheffield, Leeds, Huddersfield and Doncaster. From the interchange you can stroll into town or catch a local bus near Barnsley Civic. Local bus companies (Stagecoach, etc.) also run services linking Barnsley with nearby towns in Yorkshire.

By car, Barnsley is conveniently located just off major roads. The M1 motorway runs to the west – use junction 36 or 37 for Barnsley. Arriving from Manchester or west, drivers often use the A628; from the east (Doncaster/Sheffield), the A1(M)/M18 routes are simplest. Once in town, Eldon Street (the festival address) is in the central zone, so look for parking nearby. Convenient options include the multi-storey car parks at Barnsley Town Hall (Melbourne Street/Alhambra) and at the Barnsley Interchange. As parking can be limited during busy weekends, consider parking a short distance away and walking or hopping a local bus to the venue.

For air travel, the nearest major airports are Leeds Bradford and Doncaster Sheffield. Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) is about 23 miles away (roughly 40-45 minutes by car); Doncaster Sheffield (DSA) is around 30 miles (about 40 minutes). Manchester Airport (MAN) is also reachable in about an hour by road or train. Each airport offers car hire and connections to ground transport. You can drive yourself into Barnsley, or use the train or coach networks (often via Leeds or Sheffield) to complete your journey.

Barnsley has a range of accommodation to suit festival visitors. In the town centre you’ll find familiar hotels (Premier Inn, Holiday Inn Express, etc.) and cosy B&Bs near Barnsley Civic. The historic Mercure Barnsley Tankersley Manor, a country-house hotel just off the M1 (J37), is a popular countryside option. There are also smaller guesthouses and pubs with rooms. Late May is a busy time, so booking early is wise. Since Barnsley is compact, even staying outside town works well – many inns and B&Bs within a few miles can be reached by a short taxi or bus ride.
