The Violet May
The Violet May are a rock band from Sheffield, formed in early 2009. The group develops a sound that draws on a wider range of influences than its local roots suggest, and it builds a reputation early on through a forceful live show.
Career and releases
The band is a five-piece and releases its debut single, “Bright Or Better”, as a limited-edition 7-inch vinyl in May 2010. After that release, it appears on Steve Lamacq’s BBC 6 Music show as his “New Favourite Band”.
The Violet May headline KOKO in London for Club NME, play a headline residency at Alan McGee’s Death Disco clubnight, and perform at Leeds Festival and Secret Garden Party. They also complete a sold-out tour of Italy.
Recognition and media support
Early coverage includes a place in The Guardian’s “Top 15 Tips for 2010”. The band also receives support from BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music, XFM, The Guardian, NME, Clash, Artrocker and the Daily Mail.
Line-up
The group consists of singer Chris McClure, guitarists John Kubicki and Jono How, bassist Dan Booth and drummer Alan Whitaker. Chris McClure’s vocal style is paired with the band’s rough-edged guitar work and a strong rhythm section, which helps define its live reputation.
