The Gaslamp Killer
The Gaslamp Killer is the performing name of William Benjamin Bensussen, a DJ and producer from San Diego who is based in Los Angeles. His work spans electronic music, experimental sounds, funk, hip hop, psychedelic styles, underground hip hop, dubstep, left-field hip-hop and influences from world music.
Career
He develops his name from San Diego’s Gaslamp District, which he associates with the bar scene there. After moving to Los Angeles, he finds a place in the city’s underground party circuit and becomes a resident DJ at Low End Theory, where he also contributes to a series of club podcasts. He is associated with Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder Records and with the Low End Theory and CUSS Records labels.
His production work begins in the late 2000s. In 2008 he releases the split EP The Killer Robots with Free the Robots on Obey Records, followed by the Brainfeeder EPs My Troubled Mind in 2009 and The Death Gate in 2010. He also issues a run of mix CDs, including Gaslamp Killers (2003), It’s a Rocky Road (2007), I Spit on Your Grave (2008), Hell and the Lake of Fire Are Waiting for You! (2009) and All Killer (2009), the last of which presents material from the London-based label Finders Keepers Records.
