The Black Angels

The Black Angels are a psychedelic rock band from Austin, Texas, active since 2004. Their name comes from the Velvet Underground song “The Black Angel’s Death Song”. The group records on The Black Angels Records and is associated with psychedelic rock and stoner rock.

Line-up

The band consists of Alex Maas on vocals and guitar, Christian Bland on guitar, Kyle Hunt on keyboards, Nate Ryan on bass, Stephanie Bailey on drums, and Jennifer Raines.

Style and associations

The Black Angels are described as part of the psychedelic rock tradition, with comparisons made to Spacemen 3, Spiritualized, The Warlocks, Black Mountain, The Velvet Underground and the 13th Floor Elevators. Their icon is a stylised image of Nico.

The band’s second album, Directions to See a Ghost, is announced in 2008, and their third album, Phosphene Dream, is released in 2010.
