Robert Hood is a techno producer from Detroit, United States, known for minimal Detroit techno that places emphasis on soul and experimentation. He records under his own name and is associated with Floorplan, X-101, H&M, X-102, X-103 and Underground Resistance.

Career

Hood records for Metroplex, the Austrian Cheap label, Jeff Mills’ Axis label, Hardwax and Detox Music. He also owns and runs M-Plant, a label that includes the sub-labels Drama and Duet, and it carries much of his solo output.

He is a founding member of Underground Resistance, alongside Jeff Mills and Mike Banks. The label’s releases in the early and mid-1990s help shape modern Detroit techno and contribute to a renewed creative period in the city.

Hood leaves Detroit and Underground Resistance with Jeff Mills in 1992 and continues working in New York, where he records a series of 12-inch EPs. By the mid-1990s, he focuses mainly on solo work and establishes M-Plant in 1994.

His solo catalogue includes singles such as “Internal Empire”, “Music Data” and “Moveable Parts”. His debut album for Peacefrog, Point Blank, extends his minimal approach, while Wire To Wire develops his work further in terms of musicality and detail.

Hood’s style combines acid and industrial elements with Chicago house and Detroit techno. Alongside his recording work, he connects his music with social activist aims and outreach activity.
