Newtown Neurotics are a punk rock group from Harlow, in the United Kingdom. They form in suburban Newtown, Harlow, Essex, and later drop “Newtown” from the name as their style broadens. The group is associated with socialist lyrics and a political approach, and their work sits within punk and punk rock.

Early releases and style

The band’s first album, Beggars Can be Choosers, appears in 1983. Musically, it takes cues from the Ramones, while its lyric writing is closer in tone to politically engaged groups such as the Clash and the Ruts. Over time, the band adds slower tempos and horn arrangements to its sound.

Line-up and activity

The members include Steve Drewett, who is the lead singer and guitarist, Colin Masters, and Simon O’Brien. The group also has a bassist known as Colin Dredd, who becomes ill with pleurisy. The band ends in October 1988 with a farewell show at the Fulham Greyhound.

Reunions

Newtown Neurotics later reform for a small number of reunion performances in London and Brighton, before appearing at the Wasted festival in Blackpool and the Rebellion punk festival in 2008.
