Bring Me the Horizon
Bring Me the Horizon is a group from Sheffield, United Kingdom, active since 2004. It starts as a British metalcore and pop rock band with electronic elements, and over time its sound moves through deathcore, alternative metal, alternative rock, electronic rock, drum and bass, screamo and hardcore influences. The group includes Oli Sykes on lead vocals, Matt Nicholls on drums, Lee Malia on guitar and Matt Kean on bass, with Curtis Ward, Jona Weinhofen and Jordan Fish also among its members at different points.
Career and releases
The band’s first release is the 2004 EP This Is What the Edge of Your Seat Was Made For, which blends mathcore and deathcore and helps establish its early following. Its debut album, Count Your Blessings, appears in 2006 and receives mixed reactions and generally unfavourable reviews. Suicide Season follows in 2008 and marks a change in direction, with stronger critical and commercial response.
In 2010, the band releases There Is a Hell Believe Me I’ve Seen It. There Is a Heaven Let’s Keep It a Secret., which adds classical music, electronica and pop elements. Sempiternal arrives in 2013 as the band’s major label debut and earns Gold certification in Australia and Silver certification in the United Kingdom. That’s the Spirit follows in 2015 and reaches number two on both the UK Albums Chart and the US Billboard 200. The 2019 album Amo becomes the band’s first UK number one.
Later releases include Music to Listen To... in 2019 and Post Human: Survival Horror in 2020. Post Human: Nex Gen, the second release in the planned Post Human series, is issued as the band’s seventh studio album in 2024. The group also has two extended plays and two live albums. Its debut album is later re-recorded for its 20th anniversary under the title Count Your Blessing | Repented, alongside a new deathcore track called “DEHUMANIZED”.
Style, recognition and labels
Bring Me the Horizon’s early work is closely associated with deathcore, while its later music shifts toward electronica, pop, hip-hop and alternative styles, with screamed vocals remaining a constant feature. The band becomes widely known beyond the metal scene as its style changes. It is signed to RCA Records worldwide and Columbia Records in the United States.
The group has sold over 5 million records worldwide. It has received seven Kerrang! Awards, a BRIT Award for Best Rock/Alternative Act, and two Grammy Award nominations. Its UK Rock & Metal Singles Chart entries include “Throne”, “Drown”, “Mantra”, “Parasite Eve”, “Teardrops” and “Kool-Aid”.
