Becky Hill

Becky Hill is an English singer and songwriter from Bewdley, United Kingdom. Born Rebecca Claire Hill in 1994, she works in pop and house music and is known for her early rise through televised talent competition and for a steady run of collaborations with dance and pop producers.

Early life and career beginnings

Hill begins making music at the age of 14 and performs in a band called Shaking Trees. The band receives support from BBC Introducing, including help from Andrew Marston at BBC Hereford & Worcester, who selects them to perform at the Nozstock Festival of Performing Arts and to record a live session for BBC Radio Shropshire.

The Voice UK

She auditions for the first series of The Voice UK on BBC1 with John Legend’s “Ordinary People”. Jessie J and will.i.am turn for her, and Hill chooses Jessie J’s team. She reaches the semi-final, where she is eliminated. Her appearance on the show later becomes a reference point in her career, and she remains the first contestant from the series to reach number one in the UK singles chart.

Breakthrough as a featured vocalist and songwriter

Hill’s early solo-profile work is closely tied to dance music. She provides vocals and co-writing on Wilkinson’s “Afterglow”, which reaches number 8 on the UK Singles Chart and number 1 on the UK Dance Chart. She also appears on Rudimental’s “Powerless”, from the album Home, and supplies cover vocals for Rudimental live performances at Glastonbury 2013, Bestival 2013, Wakestock 2013 and Lovebox 2013.

She also records cover versions of David Guetta’s “She Wolf”, Rudimental’s “Not Giving In”, Paolo Nutini’s “Last Request” and Alex Clare’s “Too Close”.

First UK number one and solo releases

Hill appears on Oliver Heldens’ “Gecko”, retitled “Gecko (Overdrive)” and recorded with MNEK, which tops the UK Singles Chart and makes her the first contestant from The Voice UK to achieve a UK number one single. She follows this with “Losing”, produced by MNEK and intended as the lead single from her solo album, though it debuts at number 56. She later co-writes Reigan Derry’s debut single “All of the Pieces”.

In 2015 she releases a vocal version of Watermät’s “Frequency” as joint lead artist under the title “All My Love”. In 2016 she releases “Back to My Love” featuring Little Simz, first presented as a lead single and later included on the Eko EP. She also works with MK on “Piece of Me” and with Matoma on “False Alarm”. Later singles from the EP include “Warm”, co-written with MNEK and produced by Shift K3Y, “Rude Love”, co-written and produced by MNEK, and “Unpredictable”, co-written by Karen Poole and MNEK and produced by MNEK. The EP is released through her independent label Eko Music Limited.

Record deals, albums and later singles

In 2017 Hill signs a worldwide publishing deal with Sony/ATV and also appears as a guest presenter on CBBC’s The Playlist. She later signs a worldwide record deal with Polydor Records. In 2018 she releases “Sunrise in the East”, which is treated as the lead track from a revised debut project.

She then continues a series of collaborations and writing credits: “Back & Forth” with Marc Kinchen and Jonas Blue, “I Could Get Used to This” with Weiss, and “Wish You Well” with Sigala, which becomes her first UK top 10 hit since “Gecko (Overdrive)”. She also writes “All Day and Night” for Jax Jones, Martin Solveig and Madison Beer, which becomes her first written credit to reach the UK top 10.

Hill releases the mini-album Get to Know in 2019, after material originally planned for an EP titled Fickle Emotions is folded into it. She also records a cover of Yazoo’s “Only You”, dedicated to her grandfather, who introduces her to The Flying Pickets’ version of the song. In 2020 she supports The Script on their UK and Ireland tour.

Her debut album Only Honest on the Weekend follows in 2021. Singles from the album include “Better Off Without You” with Shift K3Y and “Heaven on My Mind” with Sigala, both reaching number 14, as well as “Space”, which peaks at number 79. Other releases around this period include “Last Time” and “Remember” with David Guetta, the latter reaching number 3 and becoming her fourth top-10 hit. “My Heart Goes (La Di Da)” with Topic and “Through the Night” with 220 Kid also appear on the album. A deluxe edition later includes “Run” with Galantis, “Hold On” with Netsky, “Here For You” with Wilkinson, “Personally” and an acoustic version of “Remember”.

She also features on “Nothing Really Matters” and “Over You” with Tiësto, releases a podcast called The Art of Rave featuring Pete Tong, Sister Bliss and DJ Zinc, and covers Alphaville’s “Forever Young” for a Christmas advert, which becomes her first solo top-40 entry without a joint credit when it reaches number 35. In 2022 she collaborates with David Guetta and Ella Henderson on “Crazy What Love Can Do”, releases “Kiss My (Uh Oh)” Girl Power Remix with Anne-Marie, Little Mix, Raye and Stefflon Don, and follows with “History” with Joel Corry.
