Annie Nightingale is a British radio presenter and broadcaster, based in Osterley, United Kingdom. Born in 1940 and dying in 2024, she works for BBC Radio 1 and becomes the first female presenter on the station.

Career

She begins her career as a journalist in Brighton before joining Radio 1 in 1969 with a Sunday evening show. Over the years she presents a range of programmes, including the singles review show What's New, late-night progressive rock shows simulcast on BBC Radio 2 FM, a Sunday-afternoon request show, Friday night output, and the non-music programme Radio 1 Mailbag.

In 1982 she starts her best-known show, a Sunday-night request programme that runs for 12 years and is usually broadcast on FM after the Top 40. The show is notable for regularly playing music on CD, which is unusual on British radio at the time. In 1994 she ends the request format and moves to a weekend overnight dance-music show called The Chill Out Zone, later heard overnight in midweek.

Style and significance

Nightingale is regarded as a presenter with strong musical credibility and a long record of adapting to changing tastes. After the death of John Peel in 2004, she becomes Radio 1's longest-serving presenter. Her career at the station is described as more than twenty years longer than that of the second longest-serving presenter, Pete Tong.

She is also known for her brief, repeated introduction, saying "Hi" in the second before the vocals of the first song in her show. Her on-air exchanges with Simon Bates are remembered for their pronounced tension. Across her career, she stays closely aligned with younger listeners and new musical developments.
