Boardmasters 2012

Relentless Boardmasters is far more than just a music festival it is packed with a whole host of sports and attractions including surfing, skateboarding, BMX biking and live music. The festival takes place in Newquay, Cornwall in the area of Watergate Bay and Fistral beach its setting is quite idealic and boasts some of the most amazing views of the surrounding area. This year the festival took place over five days from Wednesday the 8th to Sunday 12th August with the sports events spread over the five days with the finals reaching their climax on the Sunday.

When you arrive at Boardmasters like any festival you load up and begin with the dreaded walk from the car to the campsite luckily here the car parks are located fairly close, however getting there was the easy bit as pitching the tent turned out to be a bit of a challange as the ground was full of stones! But be warned it’s worth the struggle to securely pitch your tent as over the course of the weekend it became incredibly windy, which saw the demise of a few tents.

Unlike many other festivals where you have the day to just drink and amuse yourself here there is lots to see and do down at Fistral beach. The down side is this required a 20minute coach ride which at first seems like a bit of an inconvenience however as the coaches run every 15mins for only £3 return it was well worth the effort. On the up side apart from the entertainment on the beach the pick up/drop off point is conveniently located in town, which gives you a chance to sample some local delicacies which is a welcome break from festival food and for those in need the chance to grab some additional supplies. Fistral beach has lots to offer, plenty of shops to investigate and sports events to enjoy are ongoing. There are trader’s stalls lining the pavements selling all kinds of sporting and surfing apparel one of the stands offered a free photo booth, which makes for a great free souvenir. The skate park and BMX ramps are located right by the beach front making it easy to get a great view of all the action. The weekend saw hundreds of athletes compete from all over the world demonstrating some phenomenal talent and skill. This makes for great entertainment for all the family coupled with the fantastic weather the beach was a real bonus.

After the days sporting events it’s time to make your way over to Watergate Bay for the music festival, which was filled with great vibes creating a great atmosphere helped no doubt by the fantastic weather. The music festival was split over six stages consisting of: The Main Stage, Unleashed Arena, Vans, Marley Point, Energy Sessions and Desporados. Over the weekend the stages boasted some massive crowd pleasers names such as; The Ting Tings, Ed Sheran, Dizzee Rascal, Donovan Frankenreiter and many more. In the warm up to the main events there were some fantastic acoustic acts such as Josh Kumra that were perfect for relaxing in the sun in preparation for the evenings headliners. When the big acts Ed Sheeran and Dizzee Rascall took to the stage in front of a huge 17,000 crowd the enormity of the festival could be felt, the whole arena rumbled as the crowd sang along to songs such as “The A Team” and “Bonkers”. The great variety of music acts featured over the weekend pretty much guaranteed something for everyone, other artists featured were: Dj Fresh, Zinc, Zane Lowe, Pulled Apart By Horses, Shy Fx and many more. At one of the more varied stages Marley point, which overlooks the bay making it the most visually stunning, Dj Natty commented saying that “it’s the best stage, great music in the sun overlooking the bay, what more could you want?”.

To keep the energy levels up the festival has plenty of food stalls dotted around, such as Indian, Chinese, Hog Roast and the usual Burger vans all at the usual festival prices upwards of £5. One notable favorite was the Old School BBQ van serving up 12hr marinated pulled pork in a bun or on nachos. To relax and rest those tired legs there were various strange looking seats around the festival grounds that looked like funny monsters adding a more to family friendly feel of this event.

Overall Boardmasters is a great festival full of entertainment offering up fantastic live music and sports in family friendly environment that will satisfy even the most seasoned festival goer.
