Southbank Centre is looking for memories of the 1951 Festival of Britain, a national exhibition following WWII and austerity. The event aims to showcase the achievements in arts and science of the UK.
The Southbank Centre appeal for Festival of Britain memories
The Southbank Centre has started a nationwide appeal for recollections of the Festival of Britain, held in London and around the UK in 1951. The festival aimed to uplift the nation after years of post-war struggles.
The Festival of Britain was a four-month event highlighting British accomplishments in various fields like arts and sciences. It was a crucial period following the WWII to showcase the nation's progress.
Inviting Memories of the Historic Event
Now, 75 years later, Southbank Centre is asking for anyone who attended the festival to share their experiences. The event attracted millions of visitors from all over the country and showcased modern art and architecture.
The Royal Festival Hall, the only remaining structure from the original site, played a significant role in the festival. The hall was completed just in time for the opening and received Grade I listed status in 1987.
